Today was supposed to be Red Bay, Labrador, but due to low visibility and lots of ice in the area, the Captain decided we should skip this port. They can see icebergs on the radar, but the danger is in submerged bergs. We took that in stride, as I understand itinerary changes are typical for this cruise due to weather.
So, another sea day, and another day of fog.
View from the balcony ad nauseum
We decided on a “down” day, meaning to just hang in the room, watch movies and what not. It’s just nice and relaxing to chill. The cabin attendants came by and I said “ice and laundry only, please” and he looked crushed. One whisked right in the bathroom, another asked if he could at least make the bed, so off they went on their duties. They try hard here!
In Boston, we had issues with the A/C not being cold enough, now it’s too chilly. It’s turned all the way up and still nothing but cool air. One call to maintenance and now a visit to the front desk and nothing. I hate to complain, but I hate being ignored more. We ran into Randy and Deen, and Randy rushed off for my present he had mentioned. He assured me it wasn’t much, but to me it was priceless.
Obviously British in origin (crisps). They were quite tasty too! Thanks Randy!
The show was some lovely looking ladies from Atlanta doing a Motown tribute. Very good show. We had no issue getting a seat on the late show. Everyone goes to bed early here for some reason.
Soooo, day 5. I went to the bathroom some time early morning and felt just fine (other than sleepy). At 7:00, I had abdominal cramps and then nausea. Uh oh. Sure enough, the runs and and then a couple bouts of dry heaves followed. I had gotten “something.” Yay.
I tossed around in bed for a couple hours and just got to sleep when at 9:15 the speaker above my bed blares out the Captain’s voice. Errrr, good morning, sir. We were now going to skip Nanortalik, Greenland, a place I had really wanted to visit because I had scheduled a hike there. Ice wasn’t the problem this time, it was an approaching storm. The decision was made to go full speed to Reykjavik, Iceland to get ahead of this. It wasn’t an atypical storm for this region, but they do get pretty bad, and I thought I heard something like 20 meter swells were we to be in it. So, wise choice and I said to myself suck it up, cupcake. Although “2 more sea days” is becoming something of a running gag. So we’d likely hit Reykjavik 2 days early with some more changes TBD.
After going back and forth to the bathroom several times and falling asleep for a bit, I finally got up at 11:00 to remove the do not disturb sign in the hopes that maintenance might actually fix the A/C. Several immodiums later and that at least solved the outflow, and the cramps eased. I still managed a picture.
View from the balcony, day 5. Hard to tell, but seas are picking up.
Damn. Another down day. Really down. More movies, and Neesh was sweet and she also occasionally went off to shop or hit the video poker. I finally had enough of the room at 5:00, and was feeling moderately good, so I took a bath (got a whirpool in the tub!), and got ready for dinner, such as it was. The main dining room was out for me, so a slice of bread, fruit plate, german chocolate cake and ice cream was my dinner. Dessert always go down easy.
Winds were about 40 knots off the bow today (60 knots apparent if one were to go outside). The seas were picking up all day leading to Drunk Walking Down the Hallways (but not the Bouncing Off the Walls Seas on the Saltmarsh Sea scale). I didn’t find them that bad, but many people had disappeared, and Neesh said there were chemical smells abound from cleanup. Occasionally, we’d hit a wave just right that sent a shudder through the ship. My plan was to start a rumor that every time that happened, I’d said loud enough, “oops, we hit another dead whale.” Managed to catch some good music in the Nest, and we both got sleepy around 10:30. Thanks to another time zone change, it was essentially 11:30, so I felt like I stayed up late.
Oh, and on the way back I was told adjustments were made ship-wide to the A/C and come back if there’s a problem. I’m about to go ballistic now.
